The Playlist 06/06/13: Greatest Motherfucker

Let me introduce the first of my new concepts for blog posts, 'The Playlist'. I've decided to let my love of music seep onto the blog now by creating a new themed playlists, consisting of 10 carefully selected songs including one track which perfectly captures the mood of the playlist.

I felt I would make my first theme a very positive one, in line with how I'm feeling currently. The theme on this playlist is empowerment, creating that mood where you feeling saying a generous fuck you to the world, people and negative influences. It is a playlist aimed to make you feel like you can take on the universe with a massive smile on your face and an inflated ego. It is, as John Grant says in the featured track GMF designed to make you feel like the 'greatest motherfucker your ever gonna' meet'.

Track 1: Strong As an Oak- Watsky, from the album Cardboard Castles (2013)

Starting off a calmer tone, I felt Watsky's Strong As an Oak would be a perfect start with its chilled backing and incisive lyrics which get right to the core. A social commentary on how we link happiness with wealth, Watsky spits off lyrics quicker and smarter than almost any of his contemporaries, telling you not to worry because you're going to be 'a-ok because I'm strong as an o-a-k'. I chose this song because Watsky's optimism shines through this track and really eases you into a nice sense of place in the world, it makes you feel part of a group and realise everything is perspective, so chin up the sun is shining.

Track 2: I Got Love- The King Blues, from the album Save the World, Get the Girl (2008)

Trying to maintain the sense of place and optimism from Watsky's Strong As an Oak, The King Blues are stepping in with their most popular song I Got Love. A song about equality, unity and love, the King Blues take their punk philosophy and turn anger into love; heck they 'have got so much love' they can't help but shout it out. A song to further increase that grin already on your face, I Got Love is the perfect boost to this playlist making you feel like you're on top of the world, yet somehow adding a little bit of passion to it. Now it's not just about feeling good, it's about raising your fists in the air, yelling it out loud and making sure you pass it onto others.

Track 3: Two Fingers- Jake Bugg, from the album Jake Bugg (2012)

Now it's time to up the ante and start to add a bit of attitude to this playlist. One of the main components of feeling empowered is to have an attitude to feel like you can just bash down the walls around you and, as Jake Bugg so aptly says, 'hold two fingers up to yesterday'. This is the perfect track to really make your heart pick up pace, yet look to the the past and realise that you're 'here to stay'. It has been a tricky path to navigate so now's the time to reflect relax, turn to the ghosts of yesterday and flip them the bird.  Two Fingers aptly builds upon the passion of I Got Love and adds a darker cathartic note to this playlist.

Track 4: No Hope- The Vaccines, from the album Come of Age (2012)

So now the Vaccines are strolling in with their anthem for the youth about vanity, egotism and what it means to be young.  No Hope is an honest account about the selfish pursuits of youth and the point in your life where you have to grow up, drop your childish egotism because it is only a defense against the crippling insecurities within. The aim of this song is to make you realise that we are all flawed, we all have those moments of 'no hope' where we have to 'come of age' but don't worry if you are honest to yourself and others you will emerge a stronger person. It is at this point we are begin to enter the dark more complex side of empowerment where have to stare weakness in the face.

Track 5: Where Da Money Go?- The Jim Jones Revue, from Savage Heart (2013)

I think its about time to up the ante and introduce to you The Jim Jones Revue, a band who I knew from the start would have to be on this list. Their powerful riffs, old school rock and roll vibe plus some of the grittiest, most powerful vocals you may ever get chance tohear. Where Da Money Go? is when this playlist really starts to get the pulse going and bring your blood to the boil, a song which screams at your enemies both real and fake with the potent words, 'you're a liar'. This song is here to make you angry, so let go, absorb the lyrics and imagine its directed at someone who you despise. To feel empowered you have to get angry and feel aggressive; so scream it, shout, swear, just get it out!

Track 6: Fuck The Universe- Ryan Adams, from Love is Hell (2003)

Staying much on the theme set up by The Jim Jones Revue, Fuck the Universe is a song with extremely powerful vocals from the modern legend Ryan Adams who wails at his inner torment as he slowly comes to the realisation he's 'a faker'. A song so well produced and written you cannot help be roused by this powerful message of self-torment which he literally screams for half the song. Through the use of compression and fuzz effects the song becomes blurry and confused, with a  message which seems so vague most of the time. Though that is the point, when looking at our inner demons and cursing everyone around us we are literally saying, 'fuck you and fuck the universe'. This is the part of the playlist where we enter the darkest part of feeling empowered, the bit when we face our own demons even though they seem to tear us apart.

Track 7: Problems- Sex Pistols, from Never Mind the Bollocks! (1977)

A playlist about empowerment and kicking out against the forces we feel oppressed by couldn't really be whole without the Sex Pistols could it? Taking a classic song from one of the most famous albums of all time Problems is the Sex Pistols' usual tongue in cheek blast at the man, whilst waving the flag of anarchy high above their Mohawks. Maintaining the passion instilled from previous songs yet turning it something more rebellious rather then plain angry. Problems is the point where you've faced your demons, explored the self and blamed all those close to you, so now it's only natural to turn against the government because, let's face it, they don't exactly put the free in freedom now. To feel truly empowered you've got to feel greater than anything and that includes the society we live. Long live anarchy!

Track 8: House of Dreams- Bliss n Eso, from House of Dreams EP (2013)

Marking the most drastic change in this playlist the Australian sensations Bliss n Eso are strolling in with their unique brand of hip hop which has gained them fame and praise wherever they stroll. Of all the things I have assured in this playlist, saying that Bliss n Eso's lyrics are outstanding is the one I will stand by the most, for every time they pick up the mic they really do create, as so aptly said at the beginning of the song, 'poetry in motion'. In their newest outing they provide this playlist with the relief that it now craves by blessing us with a feel good song aimed at making you feel amazing. So enjoy the moment because feeling at one and feeling empowered will 'set you free'.

Track 9: You and Whose Army?- Radiohead, from Amnesiac (2001)

You could probably predict that any playlist containing self reflection would contain Radiohead but have no fear this is one of their tracks which whilst sung in their famous melancholy, deep fashion is actually a very rousing song which really brings this playlist to a nice slow place. With thumping bass, beautifully played guitar and Thom Yorke's unmistakable voice Radio in You and Whose Army? Radioheard are summoning all the extraneous and internal forces to come at them, to take them on because you shouldn't underestimate them. You and Whose Army is aimed to bring this playlist to a nice relaxed level before we enter out final song and to make you feel like you have nearly become tough enough to take on the world. Yes you are very nearly fully empowered. So 'come on, come on'.

Track 10 [featured track]: GMF- John Grant, from Pale Green Ghosts (2013)

So we arrive the last track, the one this whole playlist has been building towards. A fantastic song from the haunted soul of John Grant singing about his ex-boyfriend Charlie. If any song was ever made to make you feel better after the most awful of situations it is this one. John Grant, a homosexual who is HIV positive, has had problems with his sexuality, alcohol and drugs, is probably one of the most inspiring men on the music scene at moment. GMF which stands for Greatest Motherfucker, just in case you had not realised, is a track which seems to ridden with Grant's personal torment and anger, is a self reflexive piece which employs a very quirky, almost humorous lyrically narrative which you can't help but smile along to. It hones into the essence of empowerment, which is being able to take all these personal flaws, all these extraneous forces which press down on you and turning them into nothing. You cannot help but feel empowered by the poignant chorus which proudly proclaims 'I am the greatest motherfucker you're ever gonna meet, from the top of my head, down to the tips of the toes of my feet' because hell you are and don't forget it. GMF is constantly dotted with Grant's insecurities where he views himself as 'the underdog' and I think this is a very apt statement in the context of this playlist because aren't we all underdog's in our minds? The most important thing to take from this song is that empowerment isn't about being cocky, egotistical or angry, it's about honesty, knowing your place and being happy within yourself to occupy that place.

As the title itself alludes to, I am indeed returning. With my exams done and some time taken to relax I feel more ready than ever to start the blog up again. So what can you expect from the return? Well I'm going to continue doing much as have been doing before with creative pieces being posted on here but there is going to be some new ideas and concepts I'm very eager to try out as well. As always a massive thank you to any soul who reads this because without your support I simply couldn't do it.

L'idee

This is an expansion of L'idee which I have posted before. This version is tailored towards my impending coursework which is focused on making a full length film. This is the first scene, with inciting incident in L'idee. I do however plan to edit this version to make it suitable for short film in the near future.

As always don't forget to follow me on Twitter @Philip_A_Bell for updates!

FADE IN:

INT. EMPTY ROOM- DAY

On an old wooden chair CERVELLO, a young man with wild hair, heavy eyes and a scraggly beard, stares blankly into nothing.

Cervello contorts his face as if in pain.

He shakes his head and continues to stare blankly into nothing.

Cervello raises his left hand to his ear and begins to rub his index and middle finger against his thumb. He clenches his fist very quickly and then, when he reopens his hand, begins to start clicking his fingers to a slow, steady beat.

Whilst continuing to click with his left hand Cervello then raises his right hand and begins to click both his hands into a rhythm.

As the rhythm begins to speed up he starts to stamp his foot onto an old wooden box and incorporate it into the tune.

Cervello bobs his head to beat and starts whistling as the tune gets faster and faster.

As the tune intensifies to a point where he can no longer keep up to he stops, stands up and kicks the chair over.

Breathing at an excessive rate Cervello stares at the chair enraged. As he composes himself, he tightens his tie and checks his blazer is straight and buttoned up.

Cervello spins around flexes, stretches and takes a take breath through his nostrils.

Music then begins to blare out and Cervello dances without any inhibition, as if he is in ecstasy and leaping around without a single care.

                   CERVELLO (V.O.)
          That moment.

Cervello is now reaching new levels of excitement and can hardly contain himself as his dancing gets more erratic and expressive.

                        CERVELLO (V.O.)
          When an idea hits you.

INT. WOODEN FLOOR- NIGHT

An old fashioned light bulb sparks on.

INT. SHOWER- DAY

There is someone in shower whose eyes are closed as the water pours down on them. They then open their eyes and swing their hands to their head and gasp.

EXT. STREET- DAY

There is an EXCITED MAN dashing through an empty, desolate street shouting.

                   EXCITED MAN
          Eureka!

EXT. ORCHARD- DAY

An apple is dropped by someone on a ladder and smashes on the ground

EXT. CAMPSITE- DAY

A fire starter is struck and sparks erupt off it.

INT. EMPTY ROOM- DAY

Cervello dances in excitement then flicks up the chair with his foot.

Cervello parades around the chair.

                   CERVELLO (V.O)
          Is unlike any other.

EXT. PARK- DAY

A YOUNG HANDSOME MAN, an attractive blonde guy, in his early 20’s, is in his own little world and has his head hanging down until he sees the feet of the BEAUTIFUL LADY a few paces away.

The Young Handsome Man then stops suddenly in his tracks.

He starts to very slowly; raise his gaze from the Beautiful Lady’s feet, up her legs, onto her torso and her chest.

The Young Handsome Man then locks eyes with the Beautiful Lady and they smile awkwardly at each other.

As they realise they are staring at each other, they avert their gazes in embarrassment.

Then as they look up and smile at each other again the Young Handsome Man and the Beautiful Lady walk towards each other.

                   YOUNG HANDSOME MAN
          Hi.

                   BEAUTIFUL WOMAN
          Hi.

They stare at each other longingly.

FADE OUT:

INT. EMPTY ROOM- DAY

Cervello is attempting to dance with some fancy footwork to the music but is failing miserably.

It does not faze him and he continues to dance fervently.

                   CERVELLO (V.O)
It’s as if you have been possessed by a demon

INT. BEDROOM- NIGHT

A possessed girl leaps out of her bed in shock and begins to cackle.

The possessed girl gets fully out of her bed and drops to her knees and her cackle intensifies.

INT. EMPTY ROOM- DAY

Cervello is now dripping in sweat and is forced to take a break after a final leap and flurry.

Cervello is panting as sweat drips off his hair and is bent over with his hands on his knees in exasperation.

                   CERVELLO (V.O.)
Who pokes your heart with his trident.

INT. CAVE- NIGHT

A man dressed in a very unconvincing devil costume is smirking as he throws his plastic trident into the ground.

As the trident hits the floor it shatters on the floor.

The man is holds his stomach and laughs silently.

The man proceeds to trample the pieces of the trident with his feet.

INT. EMPTY ROOM. DAY

Cervello is still bent over exasperated and takes one large breath in and swallows it.

Cervello, with sweat still streaming off him, stares into the distance and begins to calm. His breaths become shallower as he fixes his concentration.

                   CERVELLO (V.O.)
          And conjures the hellfire within.

INT. RECPTION ROOM- NIGHT

A gas fire ignites and flames spurt out.

INT. THEATER- NIGHT

A figure in silhouette screams and punches through the paper it is behind.
INT. EMPTY ROOM- DAY

Cervello is on the floor curled into a ball, rocking back and forth with sweat dripping off him.

A door opens and a shaft of light falls upon Cervello who is on the floor. He looks towards the door timidly in fear.

THE MYSTERIOUS MAN, a bald man with a black beard in his 40s who is dressed very smartly, begins to stroll towards Cervello with his boots echoing loudly as he moves.

The mysterious man squats down next to Cervells, pulls a pen out of his pocket and gestures to Cervello to take it.

Cervello ignores the mysterious man and spits towards the mysterious man’s shoes.

The mysterious man glances at his shoes as the spit rolls off them and begins to grimace. He opens his mouth as if he is about to speak but stops himself.

The mysterious man stands up and stares directly into Cervello’s face then spits onto it.

Cervello convulses in repulsion as he wipes the spittle from his face.

The mysterious man smiles, drops the pen in front of Cervello and proceeds to beat Cervello mercilessly.

                   CERVELLO (V.O.)
But not everyone likes ideas. No. In fact many people can’t tolerate them. To them they are bitter, and leave an unpleasant aftertaste.

EXT. LEMON TREE- DAY

A man bites into a lemon, gags at the taste and spits it out.
The lemon is thrown to the floor and as it hits the floor the man crushes the lemon with his heavy boots.

                   CERVELLO (V.O)
They bring trouble, change and unwanted progress.

EXT. PLAZA- NIGHT

There is a large pile of books burning as men in army uniforms continue to add to the fire.

An old man stares with a tear rolling down his eyes as he watches the books burn.

Two men in army uniforms then approach him from being and escort him away into shadows. Then shots are heard.

EXT. CITY- DAY

A large protest is occurring in the middle of a city.

Police come charging in and begin to beat back the protesters with excessive force.

There is a protester on floor being beaten by a policeman with a baton.

INT. OFFICE- DAY

An executive, with a glass of red wine in his hand stares out at the protest.

The executive lights up a cigar and chuckles heartily to himself.

INT. EMPTY ROOM- DAY

The mysterious delivers one last blow to Cervello, who is covered in blood and is choking on the floor hardly able to move.

As Cervello spits out blood onto the floor the mysterious man rolls him over, takes hold of Cervello’s hand and opens it up.

He places the pen in Cervello’s hand and lays a contact at his side entitled, ‘Declaration of Silence’.

Update: 23/04/2013

So a bit of a quickie just to explain what seems to be my huge break from blogging recently!

I've recently been quite busy with essays and revision for upcoming deadlines, so unfortunately I have been unable to focus on creating new material for a while. I also went back home recently for a much needed break and decided to put my writing on hiatus and just chill for a little bit.

But with my holiday done and essays nearing completion it does mean I'll have more free time once again. So expect the occasional post to start trickling through now and again. Whilst I'm still in exam season I won't be able to get back into full flow but after it is done I am planning on spending my five months off from studies to do a massive amount of writing. So hopefully you should get a wealth of material beginning to trickle through around the end of May.

A huge thank you to all of you who read this and drive me!

A Sonnet to Lustre: The Beauty of the Light

O'Lustre! How you babble; as sweet as swiftest brook.
Arousing with your love-song; those thrills of dark unknown.
Cavorting like a feather; who dances with lady luck.
Conversing with great vigour; in deep yet, ghastly tone.
Creating sultry women; who skip and leap around.
Conserving virtues pillar; with lazy, dumb baboons.
Controlling the thralls hammer; which smashes on the ground.
Castrating without notice; spirits who praise the moons.

O'Lustre how we love thee and could not do without.
I fear that without ye', I'd live my life in doubt.

The Fates: Final Version

I have finished off the third and final Canto of The Fates for you to enjoy now! There may be future revisions to some punctuation and minor words but overall I'm extremely happy with the tone, voice and structure of this poem so I do not foresee any dramatic overhauls. This is probably the first ever complete, revised and finished poem on this blog post as well. So I hope that you appreciate a more polished experience with this.

Canto I:

As she whispered, sweet vengeance- in ghostly prose-
From lips of sanguine and devils tongue;
The daggers blood ooze fueled his woes.

Alas he did quiver, as if to suppose.
He had seen his fate, freshly hung.
As she whispered, sweet vengeance- in ghostly prose.

He screamed, "I am trapped, in Bluebeard's coves.
The victim of deception sung!"
The daggers blood ooze fueled his woes

"M'lady I prithee, that in my throes
you shall not leave me on rafters strung!"
As she whispered sweet vengeance- in ghostly prose

"I cannot forsake you, for God only knows,
the justice I feel in breathless lung."
The daggers blood ooze fueled his woes.

"Are we the horrors, or Greek heroes?
Who in hubris Nemesis stung?"
As she whispered sweet vengeance- in ghostly prose-
The daggers blood ooze fueled his woes.

Canto II:

Behind her lips a smile bloomed,
like foul smelling ivy on broken wall.
As in her eyes, the flame consumed.

The deed was sealed, so she presumed,
That he, in foolish folly would fall.
Behind her lips a smile a bloomed.

She knew that for him Atropos loomed
provoked by Hades cackling call.
As in her eyes, the flame consumed

As she was in flight, he’d surely be damned!
Like clueless, confused and subservient thrall.
Behind her lips a smile bloomed.

As he was now finished- she assumed,
that she could escape this heavenly hall.
As in her eyes the flame consumed.

For when his ashes were exhumed,
they would see the maggots crawl.
For behind her lips a smile bloomed,
as in her eyes a flame consumed.

Canto III:

Inescapable providence: where none succeed!
Our blood, for their blood; their bones, for our soul,
Is this the God’s only reprieve?

The haunted blade it must receive
It’s ritual coat to make it whole.
Inescapable providence: where none succeed!

In her stomach, where anger seethes,
Stab her breast and pay her toll.
Is this the God’s only reprieve?

Though she gargles you’re not relieved.
To burning hell you have to stroll.
Inescapable providence: where none succeed!

With stabs unrelenting: you must concede
Your life was controlled by mystical scroll.
Is this the God’s only reprieve?

In blood her smile did not recede,
In blood his rage made him whole.
Inescapable providence: where none succeed!
Is this the God’s only reprieve

The Fates

This is a little poem based off a drawing we were shown during a seminar yesterday at my University. I decided to do it in villanelle format because it is a poetic form I have been very eager to pursue for a while now. As always, enjoy!

Canto I

As she whispered sweet vengeance- in ghostly prose-
From lips of sanguine and devils tongue.
The daggers blood ooze fueled his woes.

Alas he did quiver, as if to suppose.
He had seen his fate, freshly hung.
As she whispered sweet vengeance- in ghostly prose.

He screamed, "I am trapped, in Bluebeard's coves,
the victim of a deception sung!"
The daggers blood ooze fueled his woes

"M'lady I prithee that in my throes,
you shall not leave me on rafters strung!"
As she whispered sweet vengeance- in ghostly prose

"I cannot forsake you, for God only knows,
the justice I see in the breathless lung."
The daggers blood ooze fueled his woes.

"Are we the horrors, or Greek heroes
who through black envy, have been stung?"
As she whispered sweet vengeance- in ghostly prose-
The daggers blood ooze fueled his woes.

Canto II.

Behind her lips a smile bloomed,
which crept like ivy on castle wall,
as in her eyes, a flame consumed.

For as he panicked, she presumed,
he in foolish folly would fall.
Behind her lips a smile a bloomed.

She knew that for him Atropos loomed,
provoked by Hades cackling call.
As in her eyes, a flame consumed

Like enchantress, she knew she left him for damned,
and had made him her subservient thrall.
Behind her lips a smile bloomed.

As he was now finished she assumed,
that she could escape this heavenly hall.
As in her eyes the flame consumed.

When his ashes and skull were exhumed,
they only saw the maggots crawl.
For behind her lips a smile bloomed,
as in her eyes a flame consumed.
